Thomas Yu「The Trace of Absentee」

このたび、soco1010では Thomas Yu の個展を開催いたします。
本展では、個人的な記憶のイメージを木版リトグラフへと転換し、家族アルバムの写真を転写することで「不在」をめぐる表現を探ります。選ばれた写真の一枚一枚には、作家自身や家族との関係、あるいは時の経過とともに生まれた物理的・心理的な距離が刻まれています。さらにその上に、版に直接な彫りを重ね合わせることで、記録された写真と記憶のイメージが交錯し、新たな知覚の層が立ち上がります。

soco1010 will be hosting a solo exhibition by Thomas Yu.
Thomas transforms images of personal memories into plywood lithographs, transferring photographs from his family album to explore expressions surrounding “absence.”
Each selected photograph bears traces of his relationships with family members and the physical or psychological distance that has emerged over time.
By further carving directly into the plate,he allows recorded photographs and images of memory to intersect, giving rise to new layers of perception.

Exhibition Statement
様々な場所に拠点を替えながら、故郷はそのさらに奥にいる感じだった。
見た光景を目からカメラへ、そしてカメラからデジタルへ、その目の前の光景を追いかけた結果。
木版への転写で木リトグラフが物質的に触れる目の前の一枚へ、その一枚一枚中の余白が自分の中想像と記憶の石を確実に落とした。
実家に残された家族アルバムを開くと、そこに写っていたのは風景ばかりで、人の姿はなかった。
記録されなかった過去の光景は、かつて慣れ親しんだ風景と重なり合いながらいま蘇ろうとしている。

As I shifted from place to place, my hometown felt as though it lay even farther beyond.
The scenes I saw passed from my eyes to the camera, and from the camera into the digital realm — the result of chasing after those very sights before me.
Through their transfer onto woodblocks, the wood lithographs became tangible, each sheet dropping a stone of imagination and memory firmly within me.
When I opened the family album left at my parents’ house, I found only landscapes — no human figures.
The unrecorded scenes of the past are now being revived, overlapping with the familiar landscapes I once knew.

かつて写真を学んだ経験を背景に、イメージを物質的なメディアへと転換することに関心を寄せている。「遊び」を方法論として、偶然性や手の動きに委ねることで、イメージは次第に独立した存在へと変化する。複製と反復、計画と逸脱、複製という性質を持つさまざまな媒体を通して、イメージの新たな可能性を探っている。

個展「Pigeons in the Woods」（コウシンキョク、東京、2024）

Base on the background in photography, Yu focuses on transforming images into tangible, material media.
By adopting “play” as a methodology—embracing chance and the movements of the hand—his images gradually evolve into independent existences.
Through processes of reproduction and repetition, planning and deviation, and by experimenting across media that inherently involve replication, Yu explores new possibilities of the image.

Formerly majored in Photography at Savannah College of Art and Design.
Currently studying Printmaking at Tama Art University.
